Even there, with the priest, Cardinal Bruun (Peter Andersson), we are given the smallest of morsels about his history and other exorcisms he has seen, but the character is never developed to the point where the audience really understands him and his work.
The vatican tapes dvd movie#
It isn't the entire movie and there is never a big discussion at the Vatican of how they have been able to piece all the footage together, it just feels like a way to sell a generic movie about a priest trying to save a girl from possession. There is simply a significant portion of the movie made to look like it's surveillance camera footage. It is not, however, a device to which the film ever really commits.

As with the too-fast establishment of the characters initially, Roger here very quickly goes from thinking not much is wrong with his daughter to accepting that she's possessed by an evil spirit and needs an exorcism.Īs the name of the film suggests, The Vatican Tapes offers up a lot of closed circuit/surveillance camera footage – this is, seemingly, how the priests at the Vatican find out about Angela and her predicament. In fact, it doesn't really exist, the movie just skips over the formation of his bond with the should-be crucial character of a priest, Father Lozano (Michael Pena), who convinces Roger about what is happening. Over time, Roger comes to accept that his daughter is possessed, and that realization ought to be one of the most powerful scenes in the film. Here is a guy who has done his best to raise his daughter all by himself, and now, after being out of town with the army, is with her long enough to see her fall horribly ill.

The most sympathetic individual in The Vatican Tapes is Angela's father, Roger. While that is certainly an acceptable filmmaking technique, it diminishes the audience's level of fear in a movie where we already don't care about the characters. Rather than showing the gore, the camera cuts away or gives a shot from behind so that it can't be seen. Perhaps this is hampered by a PG-13 rating, there are certainly several moments which could induce chills-or at the very least queasy stomachs-that feel as though they are dialed down at the last minute. Added to that is the fact that the freaky possession portion of the movie is never all that freaky.

Angela, Pete, and Roger, are broadly drawn, generic individuals who are too rapidly thrown into unexplained circumstances. It isn't nearly enough, but it is one in a long string of moments in The Vatican Tapes where Neveldine and company opt to not fully develop their characters. While these moments are long enough to establish basic facts about who she is-a woman celebrating her birthday with her boyfriend, Pete (John Patrick Amedori), a man who is not liked by her army officer father, Roger (Dougray Scott)-we never form a connection with her. We only spend the briefest amount of time with Angela before things begin to rapidly go downhill. This does not occur in The Vatican Tapes, Mark Neveldine's new film about a young woman possessed by a malevolent spirit.Īfter a brief opening where we see a video of this woman, Angela (Olivia Dudley), possessed, the story goes back in time to show us how this horrific event began. Put another way, if the audience forms a relationship with the characters, the audience will care more. It is by no means essential that an audience care for the characters on screen in a movie, but if you want your audience invested in what happens to the characters it certainly helps.
